The Strength You Thought You'd Run Out Of

Isaiah 40:31

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. โ€” Isaiah 40:31

There's a particular kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix. You know the one. It's not about hours of rest or a quiet weekend. It's the bone-deep weariness that comes from carrying something heavy for a long time, from showing up day after day when you're not sure you have anything left to give.

Isaiah 40 was written to people who understood that feeling deeply. The Israelites in Babylon were exhausted, not just physically but spiritually. They had been waiting so long for God to act that some had started to wonder if He'd forgotten them entirely. The verses leading up to verse 31 actually anticipate that doubt, asking, "Why do you complain, O Jacob? Why do you say, O Israel, 'My way is hidden from the Lord'?" God wasn't scolding them. He was meeting them in their discouragement with a reminder of who He actually is.

The word translated as "hope" or "wait" here is the Hebrew word "qavah," and it carries the image of twisting or braiding, like strands of rope being wound together. To hope in the Lord isn't passive sitting around. It's an active, deliberate intertwining of your life with His. And out of that comes something you didn't have before: renewed strength.

Notice the progression Isaiah gives. First you soar, then you run, then you walk. That order might surprise you. Walking comes last, not as a lesser thing, but as a picture of steady, faithful endurance over the long haul. Sometimes the most spiritually mature thing you can do is simply keep walking, one ordinary day at a time.

Wherever you are this Saturday, whether you feel like soaring or you're just trying to keep putting one foot in front of the other, that same renewal is available to you today.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank You for knowing exactly how tired we get. We don't always have grand faith or strong feelings. Sometimes we're just trying to make it through. Today we choose to hope in You, to braid our lives into Yours and trust that Your strength is real and available. Renew us from the inside out. Teach us what it means to walk faithfully, even on the ordinary days. We trust You with what we cannot carry on our own. Amen.
