The Witness You Almost Dismissed

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. โ€” Hebrews 11:6

There's a moment most of us have experienced where we're going through the motions of faith without really expecting anything from it. We pray, but we're not sure anyone is listening. We show up, but some quiet part of us wonders if it matters. The writer of Hebrews speaks directly into that moment.

This verse comes from one of the most remarkable chapters in all of Scripture. Hebrews 11 is often called the Hall of Faith, a sweeping account of ordinary men and women who trusted God before they could see the outcome. And right in the middle of introducing all of them, the writer pauses to explain what actually made their faith faith. It wasn't certainty. It wasn't having all the answers. It was a genuine, expectant orientation toward God as someone who is real and who responds.

Notice what the verse says God rewards: not perfection, not impressive spiritual performance, but those who earnestly seek him. The word earnestly carries weight here. It suggests persistent, intentional pursuit. Not frantic striving, but sincere reaching toward God with the honest expectation that he can be found.

That's different from going through the motions. And most of us know the difference, even if we don't say it out loud.

Faith isn't manufactured confidence. It's a choice to keep orienting yourself toward a God who, according to this passage, is genuinely moved by the act of seeking him. You don't have to arrive with everything figured out. You just have to keep coming.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, some days faith feels easy and other days it feels like a reach. On both kinds of days, help me to come to you with honest expectation. Remind me that you are not far off and that you reward those who seek you. I want to be someone who genuinely looks for you, not just someone who performs the right habits. Draw me deeper into real trust. Amen.
