For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. โ Romans 6:23
There's something uncomfortable about receiving a gift you didn't earn. Most of us would rather work for what we have, pay our own way, settle our own debts. It feels cleaner somehow. More dignified. So when something truly free is placed in our hands, we don't always know what to do with it.
Paul's letter to the Romans contains one of the most compact and stunning contrasts in all of Scripture. He sets two things side by side: wages and a gift. Wages are what you earn, what you're owed, what's calculated and transferred based on your output. But a gift operates by an entirely different logic. It isn't earned. It isn't calculated. It's simply given.
The word Paul uses for "free gift" here is the Greek word charisma, which carries the idea of something given purely out of grace, with no expectation of return. Eternal life isn't a reward you've worked toward. It isn't a bonus for good behavior. It's the overflow of God's character pressing itself into your hands.
And yet we keep trying to give it back. We convince ourselves we haven't done enough to deserve it, or that we need to maintain it somehow, or that surely there's a catch. We treat grace like a loan instead of a gift.
Today, you don't have to earn what God has already freely given. You just have to stop returning it. Open your hands. Receive what's already yours in Christ.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank you for the gift I didn't earn and couldn't have. Forgive me for the ways I've tried to pay you back or talked myself out of receiving your grace fully. Help me live today with open hands, trusting that what you've given is real, and it's enough. Amen.
