The Ceiling You Forgot Isn't There

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. โ€” Ephesians 3:20

There's a version of prayer most of us settle into without realizing it. We bring God our requests, but we've already quietly decided what's realistic. We ask for enough, for manageable, for just a little better than right now. It's not unbelief exactly. It's more like we've learned to be careful with hope.

Paul wrote these words near the end of one of the most theologically rich prayers in all of Scripture. Ephesians 3:14-21 is Paul on his knees, interceding for believers, and when he gets to verse 20, something opens up. He's not making a promise about prosperity or easy outcomes. He's making a claim about the nature and character of God. The word translated "immeasurably more" is the Greek word "huperekperissou," a compound word that essentially piles superlatives on top of each other. It means beyond, over and above, exceedingly abundantly more. Paul seems to run out of language trying to describe it.

What's striking is the second half of the verse: this power is already at work within us. It's not distant. It's not waiting to be unlocked by perfect faith. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is present and active in the life of every believer right now.

So what changes when we actually believe that? We pray differently. We don't shrink our requests to what seems polite or plausible. We hold our expectations loosely, not because God is unreliable, but because he tends to surprise us in directions we weren't even looking. You might be facing something today that feels like a closed door, a ceiling, a limit. This verse gently suggests the ceiling isn't real.

God, forgive us for the ways we've quietly shrunk our picture of you. We confess that we sometimes pray with one hand already on the exit, expecting very little. Today, we want to take you at your word. You are able to do more than we can ask or imagine, and your power is already at work in us. Help us to pray with that kind of openness. Help us to hold our limitations loosely and trust that you are not confined by what we can figure out. We bring you the things we've been afraid to hope for. Meet us there. In Jesus' name, amen.
