The Neighbor You Haven't Met Yet

Luke 10:27

He answered, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.' โ€” Luke 10:27

There's a moment in Luke 10 that doesn't get enough attention. A religious expert asks Jesus who exactly counts as a neighbor, and honestly, it's a question most of us have quietly asked in one form or another. We want to know where the boundary is. Who's in? Who's out? Who do we actually have to extend ourselves toward?

Jesus doesn't answer with a definition. He answers with a story, the Good Samaritan, and then flips the question entirely. He doesn't ask, 'Who is your neighbor?' He asks, 'Who acted like a neighbor?' That shift matters more than it seems.

The command Jesus quotes here pulls together two older commands from Torah, one from Deuteronomy 6 and one from Leviticus 19. Jewish listeners would have recognized them immediately. But the way Jesus holds them together suggests something important: loving God and loving people aren't two separate assignments. They're the same movement of the heart, expressed in two directions.

What strikes me about this verse is the word 'yourself.' Not more than yourself. Not to the point of exhaustion. As yourself. There's a dignity built into that phrase, a reminder that you're also someone worth caring for.

So today, loving your neighbor might look like a text you've been meaning to send, a conversation you've been avoiding, or simply paying attention to someone who's easy to overlook. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to see.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for making love the center of everything. Help me today to see the people around me the way you see them. Give me eyes that notice, a heart that's willing, and the courage to act when you prompt me. Remind me that loving others well isn't something I have to manufacture on my own. You've already placed it in me. Guide me to express it today in whatever small or significant way you have in mind. Amen.
