The Doubt You Thought Disqualified You

Mark 9:24

Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!' โ€” Mark 9:24

There's a moment in this story that most people rush past. A desperate father comes to Jesus with a son who has suffered since childhood. Jesus tells him that everything is possible for one who believes. And the man's response is one of the most honest things anyone ever said to God: I believe. But also, I don't. Not fully. Not without trembling.

What's remarkable is what Jesus does next. He doesn't correct the man. He doesn't send him away. He doesn't wait for a cleaner, more confident confession. He heals the boy. Right then. With that fractured, half-trusting prayer still hanging in the air.

This matters more than we often let ourselves believe. We've grown up with the idea that faith has to be certain before it counts, that doubt is a kind of spiritual failure. But this passage tells a different story. The father's cry wasn't a failure of faith. It was faith being honest about its own limits. And Jesus met him exactly there.

Maybe you're in a season where prayer feels uncertain. Where you're asking God for something but you're not sure you really expect anything to happen. That's not disqualifying. That's human. The invitation isn't to perform confidence you don't have. It's to bring what's actually true about where you are and let Jesus work with that.

Doubt doesn't close the door to God. Sometimes it's the very thing that gets you to knock.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, we come to you today just like that father did, with faith that is real but also uneven. We believe, and we also struggle to believe. Thank you for not requiring perfection before you show up. Help us to bring our honest hearts to you, even when they're uncertain. Meet us in the middle of our doubt, and do what only you can do. Amen.
