But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. โ Galatians 5:22-23
There's something worth noticing about the word Paul chose here. Not gifts. Not achievements. Not disciplines. Fruit.
Fruit doesn't announce itself. It grows quietly, through seasons you're not always paying attention to, and often it's someone else who notices it before you do. That's actually part of what makes this passage so quietly remarkable. Paul isn't describing a checklist of behaviors you need to manufacture. He's describing what naturally emerges from a life rooted in the Spirit of God.
In the original context, Paul was writing to churches in Galatia who had gotten tangled up in the idea that spiritual maturity was about external performance and rule-keeping. His response was gentle but clear: that's not how this works. The life God produces in you looks more like an orchard than a performance review.
Think about what fruit actually requires. The tree doesn't strain to produce apples. It simply stays connected to its roots, receives what it needs, and over time, something good appears. That's the picture Paul is painting for you.
You might be in a season where you look at your life and think, nothing is changing. But slow growth is still growth. The kindness you're showing when it's inconvenient, the faithfulness you're practicing when it's unnoticed, the patience you're finding in a frustrating relationship, that's fruit forming. Real, Spirit-grown fruit.
You don't have to force it. You just have to stay connected to the One who produces it.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for the reminder that You are the one at work in me. I confess that I sometimes try to force transformation through willpower alone, and I get discouraged when I can't see progress. Help me to stay rooted in You today, trusting that Your Spirit is quietly doing what only You can do. Grow in me what I can't grow in myself. And give me eyes to see the fruit You're already producing, even in the small, ordinary moments of this day. Amen.
