If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. โ Romans 12:18
There's a relationship most of us are carrying around like a stone in our pocket. Maybe it's a friendship that quietly fell apart, a family member who never acknowledged the hurt they caused, or a coworker who moved on as if nothing happened. And somewhere inside, we're still waiting. Waiting for an apology. Waiting for things to be made right before we take any steps toward peace.
Paul's words in Romans 12:18 are worth sitting with carefully, because they don't say what we might expect. He doesn't say "live at peace with everyone" as if that's always fully achievable. He frames it honestly: "if it is possible, as far as it depends on you." That phrase is everything. Paul, writing to a community navigating real tension between Jews and Gentiles, between former enemies and uneasy neighbors, understood that peace isn't always a two-person achievement. Sometimes the other party won't cooperate. Sometimes reconciliation isn't safe or even possible.
But notice what he's protecting you from. He's protecting you from tying your peace to someone else's choices. The call here is to handle your side of the street faithfully, not to control the outcome. That's actually a gift. You don't have to wait for the apology to stop being bitter. You don't have to wait for resolution to release the weight.
This doesn't mean pretending nothing happened or forcing closeness where trust has broken down. It means asking honestly: what's within my power here? Sometimes that's a hard conversation. Sometimes it's quietly releasing a grudge in prayer. Sometimes it's simply choosing not to rehearse the offense one more time today.
Peace isn't always a destination you both arrive at together. Sometimes it's a direction you start moving in on your own.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, you know the relationships I'm holding at arm's length. You know where I've been hurt, where I'm still waiting, and where bitterness has quietly taken root. Help me see clearly what is mine to do and what I need to release to you. Give me the courage to take whatever faithful step is within my reach today, and the grace to trust you with everything beyond it. I want to be a person who moves toward peace, even when it's hard. Amen.
