The Light You're Not Hiding Anymore

Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. โ€” Matthew 5:14-16

Notice what Jesus doesn't say here. He doesn't say you could become a light, or that someday, once you've grown enough or learned enough, you might qualify. He says you are the light. Present tense. Already true. That's worth sitting with for a moment.

This passage comes from the Sermon on the Mount, and it lands right after the Beatitudes, which describe people who are often overlooked: the poor in spirit, the grieving, the meek. Jesus has just finished telling ordinary, unspectacular people that they are blessed. Then he turns around and tells them they are the light of the world. The sequence is intentional. You don't have to be impressive to carry light. You just have to be willing.

The image of the lamp under a bowl is almost comical when you think about it. Who would do that? You'd defeat the entire purpose. But we do this more than we realize. We shrink back in a conversation where honesty was needed. We hold back an encouragement we felt nudged to give. We downplay our faith so we don't stand out. We put the bowl right on top of the flame.

Shining isn't about performance. It's about not actively covering what God has already placed in you. Your kindness in a stressful situation. Your calm in someone's crisis. Your willingness to show up when it would've been easier not to. These aren't small things. They're light.

Someone in your world today needs exactly what God has put in you. Don't make them sit in the dark.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for calling me light before I ever felt like it. Forgive me for the moments I've hidden what you've placed in me out of fear or self-doubt. Today, help me to simply stop covering the flame. Let my words, my presence, and my choices point people toward you. I don't need to be extraordinary. I just need to be willing. Make me that. Amen.
