Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. โ Proverbs 3:5-6
There's something quietly stubborn in most of us that wants to figure things out before we bring them to God. We do the math, weigh the options, run through every possible scenario, and then, if we're honest, we present God with the plan we've already chosen and ask Him to bless it. We're not trying to be dishborn. It just feels responsible to show up with answers.
But Proverbs 3:5-6 gently pulls that habit apart. This passage comes from the Hebrew wisdom tradition, and it isn't warning us against thinking carefully. The word translated "understanding" here refers specifically to relying on our own perception as the final authority. The problem isn't analysis. It's when analysis becomes the ceiling instead of the floor.
"Lean not" is a posture word. Leaning communicates weight, dependence, what you actually put your body against when you need support. Solomon is saying that the place where you rest your full weight matters enormously. And our own understanding, capable as it is, wasn't designed to bear that load.
The promise in verse 6 is remarkable. "He will make your paths straight" doesn't mean the road will be easy or short. It means it will be direct. Purposeful. Not wasted. God doesn't just bless our plans from a distance. He actively straightens the road as we walk in submission to Him.
Today, you might be staring at a decision that feels too big, or a situation that simply won't resolve no matter how much you think it through. That's not a sign you need more information. It might be an invitation to lean somewhere new.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, we confess that we lean on our own understanding more than we realize. We come to You today with the decisions we've been turning over in our minds, the situations we've been trying to solve on our own. Teach us what it actually feels like to trust You with the full weight of something. Straighten our paths as we submit to You, not just in the big moments, but in the small daily choices too. We trust that You are good and that Your direction is better than our best plan. Amen.
