The Treasure You've Been Stepping Over

Matthew 13:44

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. โ€” Matthew 13:44

There's something almost funny about this parable when you slow down to picture it. A man is walking through a field, probably doing something completely ordinary, and he stumbles onto something that changes everything. Jesus doesn't tell us he was searching. He wasn't on a spiritual quest or doing his best to be devout. He was just... there. And suddenly, so was the treasure.

This little parable in Matthew 13 is only one verse long, but don't let its size fool you. Jesus was painting a picture of what the kingdom of God actually feels like when it breaks into your everyday life. Not always dramatic. Not always expected. Sometimes it arrives while you're doing something completely mundane, and it catches you completely off guard.

What makes this man's response so striking is the emotion Jesus highlights. He doesn't just act, he acts with joy. He sells everything, yes, but he does it gladly. There's no grief over what he's giving up because what he's found has completely reordered his sense of value. The treasure doesn't just give him something new; it reframes everything he already had.

That's worth sitting with. Sometimes we treat our relationship with God like a duty to maintain rather than a discovery to treasure. We go through the motions, check the boxes, and forget that what we've actually found is the thing worth rearranging everything else around.

Today might be a good day to ask yourself honestly: does your life reflect that you've found something extraordinary? Not perfectly, not without struggle, but genuinely? Because the treasure is still there. You haven't stepped past it for good. It's waiting to be rediscovered right where you're standing.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, forgive us for the days when we treat what we have in You as ordinary. Remind us today of what we've actually found. Stir up that joy in us again, the kind that makes the cost of following You feel less like loss and more like the most obvious trade we've ever made. Help us live like people who know what they've stumbled onto. Amen.
