The Light You're Not Hiding Under

There's something worth noticing here. Jesus doesn't say you should try to become the light, or that you might be the light someday if you get yourself together. He says you are the light of the world. Present tense. Already true.

This is part of the Sermon on the Mount, and Jesus has just finished describing the Beatitudes, these upside-down qualities that mark people in God's kingdom. Mourners. Peacemakers. The poor in spirit. And right after describing those people, he turns and says, you're the light of the world. Not the polished. Not the powerful. The ones who know their need and keep showing up anyway.

The lamp illustration would have landed immediately for his audience. In a first-century home, one lamp mattered. You didn't cover it. That would be absurd. The whole point of a lamp is what it does for the room.

So what does it mean to put your light under a bowl? Sometimes it looks like staying quiet when encouragement would cost you nothing. Sometimes it's shrinking back from a conversation because you don't want to seem too much. Sometimes it's convinced yourself that your particular kindness, or gift, or presence doesn't really count.

But notice what Jesus says the light is for. Not your reputation. Not even your own growth. It's so others see good deeds and give glory to God. Your life, lived faithfully and openly, points people toward something bigger than you.

You don't have to be loud to shine. You just have to stop covering it up.
