The Generous Person You Already Are

There's a version of generosity most of us have practiced at some point. The kind where you give because you feel guilty if you don't. Where you say yes to something but feel a quiet resentment the whole time. Where your hand opens but your heart stays closed. Paul isn't describing that kind of giving here, and honestly, neither is God asking for it.

This verse comes near the end of a longer passage where Paul is encouraging the church at Corinth to follow through on a collection they'd already promised for believers in Jerusalem. He's not guilting them into it. He's actually saying something more radical: God isn't interested in what you give under pressure. He cares about what your heart has already decided.

The word translated "cheerful" here comes from the Greek word hilaros, which is where we get the English word "hilarious." That's not a typo. The generosity God delights in is so free, so unforced, that it borders on joyful abandon. It's the giving that comes from someone who genuinely wants to, not someone checking a box.

So here's the question worth sitting with today: what has your heart already decided? Not what obligation is pressing on you, but what do you actually want to give, whether that's money, time, attention, or encouragement to someone who needs it?

You might find that the generous impulse is already there. It just needs permission to act without the weight of compulsion attached to it. God loves that giver. And He's inviting you to be them.
