Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. โ Revelation 3:20
There's something striking about this image when you sit with it long enough. Jesus is not forcing his way in. He's not prying the door open or slipping through a window. He's standing outside, knocking, waiting for someone to actually open up.
This verse comes from a letter to the church in Laodicea, a congregation Jesus describes as lukewarm. Not hostile. Not heretical. Just... distracted. Going through the motions. Comfortable enough with religion that they'd stopped noticing what was missing. And what was missing was him. The living presence of Christ had somehow ended up on the other side of the door, and life inside had gotten so routine that nobody noticed the knocking.
That's the part that can catch us off guard. This isn't a verse about unbelievers. It's written to a church. To people who already had the theology, the tradition, the community. And yet Jesus stands at the door of their daily life and says, make room for me in there.
The invitation here is deeply personal. The Greek word for "eat with" carries the warmth of a shared meal, unhurried time, real conversation. Not a quick check-in. Jesus isn't asking for a slot in your schedule. He's asking to be part of how you actually live.
You might notice the door shows up in the ordinary places. A quiet morning before the noise starts. A pause before a hard conversation. A moment of gratitude you almost rushed past. The knocking isn't always loud. Sometimes it's just a gentle nudge toward presence.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I've walked right past you without realizing it. I don't want a faith that keeps you at arm's length. Open my ears to hear your knock today, in the quiet moments and the busy ones. Come in. Sit with me. I want to live with you close, not just believe in you from a distance. Amen.
