The Voice You Keep Second-Guessing

John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. โ€” John 10:27

There's a moment most of us know well. You sense a nudge toward something, a quiet inner pull in a clear direction, and then almost immediately you start questioning it. Was that God? Was that just me? Did I eat something weird? We become our own worst cross-examiners when it comes to hearing from the Lord.

What Jesus says in John 10:27 is worth sitting with for a minute. He doesn't say his sheep might hear his voice someday if they get spiritually advanced enough. He says they hear it. Present tense. Ongoing reality. This is a statement about the nature of the relationship, not a reward for the especially devout. In the ancient world, a shepherd's voice was genuinely distinct to his flock. Sheep from different flocks could graze together, but when a shepherd called, his own sheep moved. They weren't analyzing the sound. They knew it because they'd been with him long enough.

That's the picture Jesus is painting. Hearing his voice isn't some mystical gift reserved for a special few. It's the natural result of being in relationship with him. You've been with him. You know him. Which means you're more equipped to recognize his voice than you probably give yourself credit for.

This doesn't mean every impression you have is automatically divine. Discernment matters. But chronic self-doubt about whether God speaks to you at all? That's not humility. That's underselling the relationship you actually have.

This Sunday, instead of dismissing every quiet prompting before it even gets a hearing, what if you treated it with a little more respect? Bring it to prayer. Sit with it. Test it against scripture. You might be surprised how often the voice you've been second-guessing was right.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you that you are a God who speaks and a Shepherd who calls his own by name. Forgive me for the times I've talked myself out of hearing you before I even really listened. Grow my confidence not in myself, but in the reality of this relationship. Help me to recognize your voice more clearly, to trust it more readily, and to follow it more faithfully. I want to walk closely enough with you that doubt gives way to discernment. Amen.
