The Burden You Were Never Meant to Carry Alone

There's something in us that wants to handle things alone. We convince ourselves that asking for help is weakness, or that our struggles are too small to bother anyone with, or that everyone else is too busy with their own lives. So we carry things quietly, and the weight gets heavier than it was ever supposed to be.

Paul's words to the Galatians are short, but don't let their brevity fool you. He's writing to a young church wrestling with legalism, division, and the temptation to compete with one another. Into that tension, he says something stunning: the entire law of Christ can be fulfilled by this one thing, bearing one another's burdens. Not perfecting your theology. Not performing your faith correctly. Carrying each other.

The Greek word used here for burdens, baros, refers to a crushing weight. Not a minor inconvenience, but something genuinely heavy. Paul isn't talking about carrying someone's grocery bags. He's talking about the kind of weight that bends you. And his instruction is clear: that weight was designed to be shared.

This matters because community isn't just a nice feature of the Christian life. According to Paul, it's where the love of Christ actually takes shape in the world. When you let someone sit with you in a hard season, or when you show up for someone who's struggling, that's not just kindness. That's the law of Christ being fulfilled in real time.

So today, consider two questions. Is there a burden you've been carrying alone that you need to hand to someone? And is there someone in your life whose weight you could help carry this week? Both questions matter equally.
