The Small Thing You Thought Didn't Matter

Zechariah 4:10

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zechariah's hand. โ€” Zechariah 4:10

There's something quietly devastating about looking at a small effort and deciding it doesn't count. You show up to pray for five minutes and think, that's nothing. You offer a kind word and wonder if it made any difference. You take one small step toward something God placed in your heart and almost immediately talk yourself out of celebrating it, because it feels so far from finished.

Zechariah 4:10 was written to a community that had every reason to feel discouraged. The Israelites had returned from exile and were rebuilding the temple, but the new structure looked painfully modest compared to the glory of Solomon's original. People were openly grieving the smallness of it. The work felt inadequate. The progress felt embarrassing. And into that exact moment, God spoke through the prophet Zechariah with a word that reframes everything: don't despise small beginnings, because I actually rejoice over them.

The word translated "despise" here carries real weight. It means to treat something as worthless, to look down on it with contempt. And God is essentially saying, stop doing that to what I've started in you.

What's remarkable is that God doesn't promise the work will stay small. He just refuses to let smallness be a reason for shame. The plumb line in Zechariah's hand was a simple measuring tool, ordinary and unglamorous. But God was watching that small act of faithfulness with joy.

Whatever you're building today, however modest it looks right now, God is not embarrassed by it. He's not waiting for you to have more to offer before He pays attention. He rejoices over the beginning. That means your beginning counts.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, forgive us for despising the small things You've asked us to do. We confess that we've looked at our efforts and called them too little, too slow, too ordinary. Help us to trust that You rejoice over faithfulness, not just results. Give us courage to keep showing up, keep taking the next small step, and keep believing that You are at work even when we can't see the full picture yet. Thank You for not waiting until we have it all together before You call us good. Amen.
