I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. โ 1 Corinthians 3:6-7
There's something quietly humbling about watching something grow. You prepare the ground, you show up faithfully, you do what you can with what you have. And then, at some point, you realize the thing you hoped for is actually happening, and your hands weren't the most important part of the story.
Paul wrote these words to a church in Corinth that had gotten tangled up in an old, familiar argument: who deserves the credit? Some were claiming loyalty to Paul, others to Apollos, as though the messenger were the message. Paul cuts right through it. He names his own role plainly and then steps aside. The growth? That was never his to give.
What's striking about this passage is how honest Paul is about the work itself. He doesn't minimize the planting. He doesn't tell Apollos the watering didn't matter. Both things were real contributions, genuinely necessary. But neither one could make a seed become something living. Only God can do that.
Maybe you've been pouring yourself into something for a long time. A relationship you keep trying to nurture. A prayer you've repeated so often it feels worn smooth. A season of parenting, or serving, or showing up for someone who doesn't seem to notice. You've done your part faithfully, and the results haven't matched your effort.
Here's the grace in Paul's words: the growth was never yours to manufacture. Your faithfulness matters deeply, but the outcome belongs to God. You're not failing when you can't force what only He can give. You're just learning the difference between your part and His.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for reminding us that we are partners in Your work, not the source of it. Help us to plant faithfully, to water with patience, and to trust You with the growth we cannot control. Where we've been striving to do what only You can do, give us the grace to let go. Teach us to find peace in faithfulness rather than anxiety over outcomes. We trust You with what we've sown. Amen.
