The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. โ Deuteronomy 31:8
There's something Moses is doing in this moment that we often miss. He's not speaking these words from a place of comfort. He's old, he knows he won't be crossing the Jordan, and he's handing off everything he's led for forty years to a younger man who's probably terrified. This isn't a pep talk from someone on easy street. This is a man who has seen God show up in impossible situations, and that's exactly why he can say it with such certainty.
The phrase "goes before you" is worth sitting with. It means God has already been where you're heading. The meeting you're dreading on Monday morning, the conversation you've been putting off, the season of change that feels like standing at the edge of a river with no bridge in sight. He's already there. Not waiting to see how things unfold, but actively present in the space ahead of you.
And then the second half: "he will never leave you nor forsake you." This wasn't just poetic encouragement. In the original Hebrew, this was covenantal language. It carried the weight of a promise that couldn't be broken based on performance or circumstance. God wasn't saying he'd stay as long as things went well. He was saying his presence isn't conditional.
So when discouragement creeps in this week, and it might, you don't have to manufacture courage from scratch. You're standing on ground that's already been secured. That changes how you walk into whatever's next.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank you for going before us. We confess that we sometimes forget you've already seen what we're walking toward, and we carry fear as if we're heading there alone. Remind us today that your presence isn't something we earn or lose. You are with us in the ordinary Monday, in the hard conversation, in the uncertain season. Help us walk forward not because we feel brave, but because we trust you. Amen.
