The Door You Kept Walking Past

Revelation 3:20

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. โ€” Revelation 3:20

There's something worth slowing down for in this verse, because it's easy to read it and move on without letting it actually land.

Jesus is speaking these words to the church in Laodicea, a congregation that had grown comfortable and self-sufficient. They weren't hostile to God. They were just... busy. Distracted. Going through the motions. And somehow, in all of that, they had ended up on the inside of a door that Jesus was standing outside of, knocking.

That image is striking. He's not forcing the door. He's not bypassing it. He's knocking, which means he's waiting for a response. He's treating the people inside with dignity and patience, even when they're the ones who created the distance.

The invitation he extends is deeply personal. In the ancient Near East, sharing a meal wasn't a casual thing. It was an act of intimacy and covenant. When Jesus says he'll come in and eat with you, he's describing real presence, real relationship, the kind that lingers and nourishes and changes the atmosphere of a room.

You might find yourself on the other side of that door today without realizing it. Not because of rebellion, but because life filled in the gaps. Work, obligations, worry, noise. The door didn't slam shut. It just quietly closed.

The good news is that he's still there. Still knocking. And the door, as it turns out, opens from the inside.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for your patience with us. Thank you for not walking away when we've grown distracted or distant. Today, we open the door. Come in. Sit with us. Let your presence fill the ordinary spaces of this day. We don't want to just know about you. We want to know you. Amen.
