The Name You Keep Forgetting Is Yours

1 John 3:1

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. โ€” 1 John 3:1

There's a word in this verse that doesn't get enough attention. It's the word "lavished." John doesn't say God's love was offered, or extended, or made available. He says it was lavished. That's extravagant language. That's the kind of word you use when something is poured out with no concern for running out.

John was writing to a community of early believers who were navigating real tension. The world around them didn't recognize them as anything special. They weren't powerful. They weren't respected. And so John essentially stops mid-thought and says, "Wait. Do you see this? Do you actually see what has been done for you?" The phrase "see what great love" carries a sense of astonishment, like he's grabbing them by the shoulders and asking them to look at something they keep walking past.

And then he says something remarkable. He doesn't just say we are called children of God, as if it's a title on paper. He adds, "And that is what we are!" That exclamation isn't accidental. John wants it to land. The name isn't honorary. It's real. It describes something true about your actual identity right now, not someday, not once you've cleaned things up.

We spend so much energy performing for approval, shrinking from shame, or waiting until we feel worthy enough to believe good things about ourselves. But this verse doesn't ask you to earn the name. It asks you to receive it.

You're a child of God. Not in a vague, inspirational-poster kind of way. In a specific, chosen, lavishly loved kind of way. That's your name. It's worth remembering today.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Father, we confess that we often forget who we are. We let shame, comparison, and self-doubt speak louder than the truth you've declared over us. Today, help us actually receive the identity you've given us. Not as something we earned, but as something you lavished on us freely. Let that name, "child of God," settle deep into the places in us that still aren't sure we belong. We want to walk today like people who know whose they are. Thank you for a love that doesn't run out. Amen.
