Come, for everything is now ready. โ Luke 14:17
There's something quietly stunning about this verse. It's only six words long, but it carries the weight of an entire invitation. In Jesus' parable of the great banquet, a host has prepared an elaborate feast and sends his servant out with this simple message: come, because everything is ready. Not almost ready. Not ready when you get yourself together. Ready now.
The original audience would have understood the social weight of this moment. In first-century culture, accepting a banquet invitation was a serious commitment. You didn't back out. But in the parable, guest after guest finds a reason not to come. A field to inspect. Oxen to try out. A recent marriage. The excuses sound reasonable, but they're still excuses. And the host's response is to throw the doors open wider, to the poor and the crippled and anyone else who will come.
Here's what strikes you when you sit with this passage: the table wasn't waiting for anyone to be worthy. It was waiting because the host prepared it. That's the whole point. The readiness belongs to God, not to us.
We're all prone to postponing our approach to God. We tell ourselves we'll come when we've got it figured out, when we're less of a mess, when things are a little more stable. But the invitation doesn't say come when you're ready. It says come because everything already is.
Whatever has been keeping you at arm's length from God today, this verse is worth holding onto. The table is set. There's a seat with your name on it. You don't have to earn your way in. You just have to come.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank you for a table I didn't prepare and couldn't have earned. Forgive me for the times I've stayed at a distance, waiting until I felt worthy enough to come. Today I want to accept your invitation fully. Help me to come as I am, trusting that you've already made everything ready. Amen.
