The Finish Line You Can't Quite See

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. โ€” Hebrews 12:1

There's something remarkable happening in this verse before we even get to the running part. The writer of Hebrews spends all of chapter eleven naming person after person, ordinary people who trusted God through impossible circumstances. Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses. People who didn't always get to see the outcome of what they believed for. And then chapter twelve opens with "therefore." Because of them. Because of what they did and how they lived, we're not starting from zero.

The image is a stadium, and the stands are full. Not of passive spectators, but of people who have already run their leg of the race and are now watching yours. That changes the texture of what it means to persevere. You're not grinding through your life in isolation. You're running in front of people who understand what it costs.

The instruction is practical and honest. Throw off what hinders. The writer doesn't say your burdens are imaginary. He acknowledges that some things genuinely slow you down, whether that's a habit, a fear, a grudge you haven't released, or an expectation that's become a weight. The goal isn't perfection before you start running. It's clearing enough space to actually move.

And notice the race is "marked out for us." Not a generic route. Your specific path, shaped for who you are and where you're going. You're not competing with anyone else's course. You're running your own.

Whatever stretch of road you're on today, you haven't been dropped into it alone. The witnesses are watching. The path is yours. Keep going.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for the people who ran before us and showed us it was possible. Help us today to let go of whatever is slowing us down, whether we can name it or not. Give us the courage to keep moving, especially when we can't see very far ahead. Remind us that you marked this path out for us, and that you're with us every step of it. We don't have to run perfectly. We just have to run. Amen.
