Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105
There's something disorienting about trying to move through a dark space you can't quite see. You reach forward, step carefully, second-guess yourself. It's not fear exactly. It's the unsettling feeling of not knowing what's right in front of you.
The psalmist knew that feeling well. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the entire Bible, and it's essentially a love letter to God's Word. Verse 105 sits near the heart of it, and what the writer describes isn't a floodlight or a stadium lamp. It's a lamp to the feet. A light to the path. In the ancient world, a lamp meant a small oil flame carried close to the ground, illuminating just enough of the road ahead to take the next step safely. Not the whole journey. Just the next step.
That's significant. We often want God to hand us a detailed itinerary, a five-year plan with all the unknowns resolved. But Scripture tends to work differently. It gives us what we need for right now. Wisdom for today's conversation, courage for today's hard call, clarity for the decision sitting right in front of us.
The beautiful thing is that you're not navigating blind. You actually have the lamp. It's already in your hands. The question isn't whether God's Word can guide you. It's whether you're opening it long enough to let it.
This Monday, whatever feels murky or uncertain, bring it to Scripture. Not to find a magic formula, but to let that small, steady light show you where to place your next step.
🙏 A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for giving us Your Word as a guide. On the days when the path ahead feels unclear and we're tempted to move forward on our own, draw us back to Scripture. Help us trust that You don't require us to see the whole road, only to follow the light You've already provided. Illuminate whatever step we need to take today, and give us the courage to take it. In Jesus' name, amen.
