Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. โ Luke 9:16
There's a moment in this story that's easy to rush past. Before the miracle, before the crowd of five thousand is fed, Jesus takes what's there. Five loaves. Two fish. An amount so small it almost seems insulting to even offer it.
But notice what he does with it. He doesn't ask for more. He doesn't send the disciples off to find better resources. He looks up to heaven, gives thanks, and breaks what he already has. The miracle doesn't happen before the giving. It happens in the breaking.
That's worth sitting with for a minute. We tend to think that God works when we finally have enough. Enough time, enough energy, enough money, enough confidence. We hold back because what we have feels too small to matter. But this passage tells a different story. Jesus blessed what seemed insufficient and it became more than enough.
You might be in a season where your hands feel embarrassingly empty. Or maybe they feel full, but full of the wrong things. The ordinary things. The leftover things. The not-quite-right things. And you're wondering if God can actually use what you're holding.
He can. He does. The loaves didn't multiply in the disciples' hands by accident. They were distributed first, and provision kept showing up as they kept giving. That's how this tends to work. Faithful offering comes before the full picture is visible.
Whatever you're holding today, offer it. It's enough to start.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for waiting until I feel like I have enough to give. Today I bring you what's in my hands, even if it feels small and ordinary. You have a history of taking insufficient things and making them more than enough. I trust you with what I have. Use it however you see fit, and help me give it freely without holding back. Amen.
