There's a strange kind of pride that keeps us from asking. We don't want to seem needy. We don't want to bother anyone. And sometimes, honestly, we're not sure we deserve what we're hoping for. So we go without, quietly managing, telling ourselves it's fine.
James 4:2 is one of those verses that lands a little differently every time you read it. The context is a passage about conflict and wanting things we don't have, and James is being remarkably direct: the reason many of us are running on empty is not because God is withholding, but because we simply haven't asked. That's a confronting observation. It suggests that prayer isn't just a spiritual ritual we complete. It's the actual mechanism by which we receive.
James was writing to early Jewish Christians who were scattered, struggling, and often at odds with one another. They were working hard to make things happen in their own strength. Sound familiar? We do the same thing. We strategize, we hustle, we white-knuckle our way through situations that God was never asking us to solve alone.
The beauty here is the simplicity. You don't have, so ask. Not because God needs to be informed, but because asking is an act of trust. It repositions your heart. It acknowledges that you're not self-sufficient, and it opens the door to receiving what you genuinely need.
Whatever you've been circling around lately, whatever need or longing you've been quietly carrying, bring it. Just ask.

God, forgive me for the ways I've tried to manage life without bringing my needs to You. I confess that I've let pride or doubt keep me from simply asking. Today I'm laying it down and opening my hands. You know what I need before I speak it, and still You invite me to ask. So here I am. Thank You for being a Father who welcomes that kind of honesty.
