A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. โ Proverbs 11:25
There's something almost counterintuitive about the way generosity works. Everything in us can lean toward holding tightly, protecting what we have, keeping our energy and resources close. And honestly, that instinct isn't always wrong. But Proverbs keeps returning to this idea that the closed hand and the flourishing life don't really go together.
This verse is part of a longer section in Proverbs 11 that explores the connection between how we treat others and how our own lives unfold. The Hebrew behind 'refreshes' carries the idea of giving someone water when they're thirsty, saturating something that was dry. And the promise is almost surprising in its simplicity: the person who does that for someone else will find themselves watered too.
This isn't prosperity gospel. It's not a transaction where you give money to get money back. It's something much more interesting. It's the observation that people who live with open hands tend to live differently inside. Generosity shapes the giver. It loosens the grip of anxiety. It reorients us away from scarcity and toward something steadier.
You might find yourself in a season where giving feels risky, whether that's time, attention, money, or simply encouragement. Maybe you're already running low. But even small generosity matters. A kind word offered when you're tired. Showing up for someone when it costs you something.
God designed us to be conduits, not reservoirs. And what flows through an open life tends to leave something good behind.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank you for your generosity toward us. Help us to live with open hands even when our instinct is to hold tight. Grow in us the kind of generous spirit that comes from trusting you rather than hoarding what we have. Show us someone today who needs to be refreshed, and give us the courage to be the one who does it. Remind us that you are our source, not our supply. Amen.
