The Grief You're Allowed to Feel

John 11:35

Jesus wept. โ€” John 11:35

Two words. The shortest verse in the Bible. And somehow, one of the most important.

The context here matters enormously. Jesus was standing outside the tomb of Lazarus, his dear friend. He already knew what was about to happen. He knew he was going to raise Lazarus from the dead. He had the power to fix everything, and he knew he was about to use it. And yet, when he saw Mary weeping and the mourners gathered around her, something in him broke open. He wept anyway.

That is not a small thing. Jesus didn't skip past the grief to get to the miracle. He didn't say, "Don't cry, just watch what I'm about to do." He entered the pain of the moment fully and completely. He let it land on him. He let it move him.

We've been taught, sometimes without anyone saying it out loud, that grief and faith don't belong together. That if you really trusted God, you'd feel more peace and less sadness. But Jesus dismantles that idea right here. Faith and tears can exist in the same breath. Hope and sorrow can sit beside each other without one canceling out the other.

Whatever you're carrying today, you don't have to perform strength you don't feel. You don't have to rush past the hard thing to prove your faith is intact. Jesus, who knew the ending, still stopped to grieve. He gives you permission to do the same.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for a Savior who weeps. Thank you that you don't stand at a distance from our pain, but you step right into it with us. Wherever grief is living in our hearts today, meet us there. Help us trust that sorrow and faith can coexist, and that you are close to us in every tender, broken moment. We don't have to rush. You are here. Amen.
