The Table That Has Room for You

There's something quietly stunning happening in this parable that's easy to miss if you read it too fast.

Jesus is telling a story about a great banquet where the originally invited guests make excuses and don't show up. So the host sends his servant out, first into the streets and lanes of the city, then out to the highways and hedges, looking for anyone willing to come. The people being gathered are the overlooked, the ones nobody thought to invite, the ones who probably assumed a feast like this wasn't meant for them.

And then comes this line: "still there is room."

Those four words say so much. The table isn't shrinking. The food isn't running low. The host isn't reluctant or making do. There's genuine space, and it's genuinely for you.

In Jesus's day, this parable landed like a thunderclap. Religious insiders were hearing that the kingdom of God wasn't their exclusive club. The people pushed to the margins were being welcomed to the center. It was a complete reversal of who counted and who didn't.

That reversal still matters today. You might carry some old story that says you're too much, or not enough, or too far gone for a seat at any meaningful table. The parable pushes back on all of that. The invitation doesn't go to the most qualified. It goes to whoever will actually come.

God isn't filling his table reluctantly. He's filling it joyfully, and there is still room.
