The Question That Opens Everything

At first glance, this question seems almost rude. The man has been lying beside the pool of Bethesda for thirty-eight years, waiting for a miracle. And Jesus walks up and asks if he wants to get well? Of course he does. Doesn't he?

But sit with the question a little longer. Jesus already knew how long the man had been there. The passage tells us that plainly. So the question wasn't about gathering information. It was about something deeper. Jesus was asking the man to name his desire out loud, to stop being a passive observer of his own life, and to actually engage with the possibility of change.

Thirty-eight years is a long time. Long enough to build an entire identity around a circumstance. Long enough for waiting to feel like the permanent condition rather than the temporary one. The man's answer is telling. He doesn't say yes. He explains why healing hasn't happened yet. He talks about obstacles and missed opportunities. It's such a human response.

You might recognize that pattern in yourself. There are places in our lives where we've grown comfortable explaining why things are the way they are instead of opening ourselves to something new. Not out of laziness, but because hoping again feels risky after so many disappointments.

Jesus doesn't argue with the man's answer. He just heals him anyway. But the question still stands for us today. In whatever area feels stuck, whatever wound feels permanent, Jesus is asking the same thing. Do you want to get well? Not as a challenge, but as an invitation. He's already present. He's already seen how long it's been. He just wants you to want it too.
