The Story You Tell About Yourself

There's a moment in Numbers 13 that's easy to read too quickly. Twelve spies have just returned from scouting the Promised Land. Ten of them come back with this report: yes, the land is good. Yes, it flows with milk and honey. But we cannot go in. And then they say something that deserves a long, honest pause: "We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes."

Notice what happened there. Before they assumed what anyone else thought of them, they had already decided what they were. The story they told about themselves shaped everything else. The giants in the land may have been real, but the grasshopper identity was something the Israelites assigned to themselves first.

This is worth sitting with because most of us do exactly this. We decide in advance that we're too small, too late, too ordinary, too much of a mess. And then we interpret every situation through that lens. The job we don't apply for. The conversation we avoid. The calling we quietly set aside because it seems meant for someone more capable.

The other two spies, Caleb and Joshua, looked at the same land and the same giants and came back with a completely different report. Not because they were naive, but because they were working from a different story. One rooted not in their own size, but in who was walking with them.

The question worth asking today isn't whether you face real challenges. You probably do. The question is: whose assessment of you are you living by? Because the voice that called you worthy, capable, and called didn't stutter.
