The Blessing You Almost Walked Past

There's something remarkable about the fact that God didn't just tell his people to behave well or work harder. He told the priests to speak blessing over them. Out loud. By name. As a practice, not a one-time event.

The priestly blessing in Numbers 6 is one of the oldest recorded prayers in human history. Archaeologists have actually found it inscribed on silver scrolls dating back nearly 2,700 years. That means these words were being spoken, worn, and treasured long before most of the Bible was even written down. And yet they still land with full force today, don't they?

Look at what the blessing actually says. It asks God to bless and keep you, which means not just give you good things but guard and protect what he's given. Then it asks for his face to shine toward you, which is ancient language for favor and delight. And finally it asks for shalom, that deep, settled peace that isn't just the absence of conflict but the presence of everything being made right.

This blessing was meant to be received regularly. The people of Israel weren't supposed to earn it first. It was spoken over them as a gift, again and again, because they needed reminding of who was watching over them.

You might walk through this Friday carrying something heavy and forget that there's a God who is actively turned toward you with grace on his face. That's not a feeling you have to manufacture. It's a truth you get to receive.
