The Friendship You Didn't Expect From God

There's a moment in John 15 that's so stunning it's easy to read right past it. Jesus, on the night before his crucifixion, gathered with his closest disciples and said something that would have been almost unthinkable to Jewish ears in the first century: he called them friends. Not followers. Not servants. Friends.

The word Jesus used here is the Greek "philos," which carries the weight of deep affection and mutual knowing. This wasn't casual language. In the ancient world, friendship implied intimacy, loyalty, and shared inner life. A servant did what they were told without being let in on the reasons. A friend was trusted with the heart behind the decisions. And Jesus looked at this group of ordinary, often confused, sometimes failing people and said, "I'm letting you in."

That's the thing about this verse that should stop us in our tracks. The shift from servant to friend isn't about earning a promotion. Jesus makes clear that he chose this relationship, not the other way around. He initiated it. He extended it. The friendship was his idea.

So much of our faith life can quietly drift toward performance mode. We follow the rules, we show up, we try to get it right, all while keeping a kind of respectful distance from God, as if closeness has to be earned first. But Jesus is saying something completely different here. He's saying the door is already open. He's already made you a friend.

You don't have to work your way into intimacy with God. You're already invited into it. That changes how you pray, how you read scripture, and how you move through ordinary days knowing you're not just doing tasks for a distant master but walking alongside someone who actually wants to know you.
