The Strength You Didn't Know You Had

There's something almost funny about this verse when you read it in context. Gideon isn't standing on a battlefield when the angel shows up. He's hiding. He's threshing wheat inside a winepress, trying to keep food away from raiding enemies, doing everything he can to stay small and unnoticed. And right in the middle of that, an angel calls him a mighty warrior.

It would be easy to read this as empty flattery. But that's not what's happening here. The angel isn't describing who Gideon is in the moment. He's speaking to who Gideon is in God's eyes, and more importantly, who Gideon is about to become. God doesn't call us according to our current condition. He calls us according to the purpose He's already placed inside us.

This matters more than it might seem at first. Gideon had every reason to see himself as weak. His tribe was the least significant in Israel, and he was the youngest in his family. By every cultural measure, he was not the obvious choice. Yet God chose him anyway and greeted him with a name that felt like it didn't fit.

Maybe you're in a season where the name God is calling you doesn't match how you feel. You feel tired, not strong. Uncertain, not courageous. Small, not significant. But what if God's assessment of you is more accurate than your own?

He sees the warrior in the person hiding in the winepress. He sees what fear and hard circumstances have been covering up. That's not wishful thinking. That's the God who finishes what He starts, working in you even now.
