The Waiting That Is Not Wasted

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. โ€” Isaiah 40:31

Waiting is one of the hardest things we do. Not because it requires great effort, but because it requires us to release control, and that doesn't come naturally to most of us.

Isaiah 40:31 sits at the end of one of the most breathtaking chapters in all of Scripture. The prophet has just spent verses reminding a weary, exiled people of who God actually is: the one who measures the oceans in the hollow of his hand, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, who knows every star by name. After all of that, after painting this enormous picture of God's power and care, Isaiah lands here. He doesn't say the waiting will be easy. He says something better: it won't be empty.

The Hebrew word translated "wait" here carries the idea of binding together, like strands twisted into a rope. To wait on the Lord isn't passive resignation. It's an active, deliberate choosing to stay connected to the one who holds what you're waiting for. There's strength in that kind of waiting. Actual strength.

You might be in a season right now where the answer hasn't come, where the door is still closed, where the situation looks exactly the same as it did six months ago. That can be exhausting in a quiet, grinding kind of way. But God doesn't waste the in-between. He does some of his most significant work in us during the seasons when nothing seems to be happening on the outside.

The promise isn't that you'll sprint through life without struggle. It's that you'll be held up when you feel like giving out. Soaring, running, walking: notice that the passage includes all three. God meets you at whatever pace you're moving today.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, waiting is hard, and we won't pretend otherwise. Some of us are tired in ways we can barely name. Remind us today that you are not slow, and that nothing happening in front of us means nothing is happening at all. Renew our strength. Bind us close to you in this season. We trust that you are doing something in the waiting, even when we can't see it. Amen.
