The Gift You Keep Forgetting to Open

There's a particular kind of frustration that comes from searching the whole house for something you already have. You've torn through drawers, retraced your steps, convinced yourself it must be somewhere else, only to find it sitting right where it always was.

That's a little bit of what Peter is describing here.

This verse is part of Peter's opening address to scattered, pressured believers who were wondering if they had what it took to live faithfully. And his answer is immediate and absolute: yes, you already do. God's divine power, he says, has already given us everything we need. Not most things. Not a good starting point. Everything.

The word Peter uses for "given" is past tense. It's done. Complete. This isn't a promise about something coming later. It's a declaration about something already deposited into your life through your relationship with Jesus. The moment you were called by his glory and goodness, you were fully equipped.

That changes the whole conversation, doesn't it? So much of our spiritual life gets spent striving after something we think we still lack. More willpower. More faith. More discipline. And sometimes what we actually need is to stop searching elsewhere and remember what we've already been given.

This doesn't mean growth isn't real or effort doesn't matter. Peter goes on to talk about exactly that. But the effort flows from fullness, not from emptiness. You're not scraping together enough to get by. You're drawing from a supply that was made complete the moment God called you.

Whatever today holds, you're not walking into it underprepared. That's not a pep talk. That's theology.
