The Burden You Were Never Meant to Carry Alone

There's something quietly heroic about trying to handle everything on your own. We learn early that needing help is weakness, that capable people figure things out themselves. So we carry. We carry worry about finances, fear about a struggling relationship, grief that hasn't found words yet. We carry it all with a kind of grim determination, wondering why we're so exhausted.

Paul's instruction in Galatians 6:2 is short but disruptive. He's writing to a community that had become competitive and divided, people comparing their spiritual performance and pulling away from one another. Into that fracture, he drops this: carry each other's burdens. The Greek word he uses is "baros," meaning a heavy, crushing weight. Not inconveniences. Actual load-bearing stuff.

And then he says something remarkable. Doing this fulfills the law of Christ. Not the law of Moses, not a checklist of religious obligations. The law of Christ, which Jesus himself described as loving God and loving your neighbor. Paul is saying that burden-sharing isn't just a nice community feature. It's the living-out of love itself.

This cuts both ways, though. It means letting others carry with you, too. Asking for help, being honest about what you're actually carrying, trusting someone enough to say "this is heavier than I can manage right now." That takes real courage.

You weren't designed for solo survival. You were designed for community. The burden doesn't disappear, but it changes shape when someone carries it with you.
