The Permission to Begin Again

Lamentations 3:22-23

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. โ€” Lamentations 3:22-23

There's something quietly radical about what Jeremiah writes in Lamentations. This isn't a triumphant psalm. It's not written from a mountain top. It's written from the rubble. Jerusalem has fallen. Everything Jeremiah loved has been destroyed. And right there, in the middle of that devastation, he lands on this truth: God's compassions are new every morning.

The Hebrew word for compassions here is "rachamim," which carries the sense of deep, tender mercy rooted in the very character of God. It's not a polite mercy. It's a fierce, gut-level, protective mercy. And Jeremiah says it doesn't run out. It doesn't get tired. It doesn't quietly give up on you after you've needed it too many times.

What makes this passage so striking is the word "new." Not recycled mercy. Not mercy that's been stretched thin from yesterday's failures. Fresh mercy, arriving with the morning like dew on the grass, whether you noticed it or not, whether you deserved it or not.

We all carry the weight of things we wish we'd done differently. A conversation that went sideways. A commitment that slipped. A version of yourself you're not proud of. The enemy of your soul wants you to believe that each misstep adds up, that the ledger eventually closes on you. But that's not the God of Lamentations. That's not the God of the empty tomb.

This Saturday morning, you're not starting behind. You're starting with fresh mercy. The invitation isn't to be perfect today. It's simply to begin again, trusting that the same faithfulness that carried you through every yesterday is already waiting for you in what's ahead.

Lord, thank you that your mercies don't run dry. Thank you that this morning is genuinely new, not just on the calendar but in your heart toward me. Help me to receive your compassion today without guilt and without conditions. Where I've been hard on myself, soften me. Where I've been tempted to give up, give me the grace to begin again. Your faithfulness is great, and I'm grateful to be held by it. Amen.
