Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. โ Zechariah 4:10
We live in a world obsessed with scale. Bigger numbers, wider reach, faster growth. So when something in our lives looks small, quiet, or slow, it's easy to write it off as not enough. Maybe even as failure.
That's exactly where Zechariah chapter four lands. The prophet is speaking to a community of Jewish exiles who have returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. The problem is, the new temple looks nothing like Solomon's original. It's modest. People are weeping at the sight of it because it seems so underwhelming compared to the glory of what came before. And into that discouragement, God asks a pointed question: who has despised the day of small things?
The word "despise" here carries real weight. It means to regard with contempt, to treat as worthless. God is essentially saying, don't you dare look at what I'm doing and call it insignificant. Because He rejoices over the work beginning. Not the work finishing. The beginning.
That's worth sitting with for a moment. God finds joy in the early, uncertain, unimpressive stages of something He's building. The wobbling first steps of obedience. The small act of kindness that no one tweets about. The quiet faithfulness in a season where nothing seems to be happening.
You might be in one of those seasons right now. The thing you're doing feels too small to count. But God's perspective reframes everything. He's not waiting for it to look impressive before He shows up. He's already rejoicing.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for despising the small things you've placed in my hands. Help me trust that you're at work in the quiet seasons and the modest beginnings. I don't need to see the full picture to stay faithful. Teach me to find joy in the same places you do, in the starting, the trying, the small and steady acts of obedience. You are building something I can't fully see yet, and I want to trust that. Amen.
