The Map You Keep Folding Wrong

There's something almost universal about the experience of being absolutely certain you're going the right way, only to realize you've been turned around the whole time. You were confident. You had a plan. And somehow, you still ended up somewhere you didn't intend to go.

Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks directly into that moment. This passage comes from the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Bible, a collection of teachings meant to shape how God's people navigate everyday life. And what's striking here isn't just the encouragement to trust God. It's the specific warning tucked inside it: don't lean on your own understanding.

That word "lean" is important. It suggests weight, like something you press against to hold yourself up. The writer isn't saying your mind is bad or that thinking is dangerous. He's saying there's a particular posture of the heart where we shift our full weight onto our own conclusions, our own readings of a situation, our own best guess about what comes next. And that posture, however natural it feels, tends to get us lost.

The promise on the other side of this is genuinely beautiful. Submit to God in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight. Not easier, necessarily. Not instantly clear. But straight, meaning purposeful and directed by someone who actually sees the whole road.

Maybe today you're facing a decision and your own reasoning keeps running in circles. That might be an invitation to loosen your grip a little. To stop pressing so hard against your own conclusions and open your hands toward God instead. Trusting Him doesn't mean you stop thinking. It means you stop treating your thinking as the final word.
