Don't you have a saying, 'It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. โ John 4:35
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples after a remarkable encounter with a Samaritan woman at a well. The disciples had just returned from town, completely unaware that while they were grocery shopping, Jesus had been having a life-changing conversation that would transform an entire community. They were thinking about lunch. He was seeing souls ready to respond to God's love.
The disciples were operating on agricultural time. In their minds, harvest season was months away. But Jesus was operating on kingdom time, where readiness isn't determined by our calendars or comfort zones. When He told them to open their eyes, He wasn't just talking about better vision. He was calling them to see with spiritual awareness, to recognize divine opportunities that were happening right now.
The beautiful irony here is that the harvest Jesus was talking about was literally walking toward them. The Samaritan woman had gone back to her town and was bringing people to meet Jesus. The fields weren't just ripe, they were moving. Yet the disciples almost missed it because they were stuck in their expectations of how and when God works.
How often do we do the same thing? We're waiting for the right moment, the perfect opportunity, the ideal circumstances to step into what God is calling us to do. Meanwhile, divine appointments are happening all around us. Your neighbor who's been struggling. That coworker going through a divorce. The cashier who seems overwhelmed.
Sometimes the harvest isn't four months away. Sometimes it's right in front of you, waiting for you to simply open your eyes and see.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, give us eyes to see the opportunities You place before us each day. Help us recognize that Your timing is often different from our expectations, and that You're always at work around us. Open our hearts to the harvest that's ready right now. Amen.
