When Your Best Friend Ghosts God

1 Samuel 18:3

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. โ€” 1 Samuel 18:3

I've been thinking about friendship lately, especially after watching someone I care about slowly drift away from their faith. You know that person who used to text you prayer requests and invite you to Bible study? Now they barely respond to your messages, and when they do, there's this invisible wall between you.

Jonathan and David had something beautiful. Their friendship wasn't just built on shared interests or convenience. It was covenant friendship, the kind that says "I'm committed to your highest good, even when it's hard." But here's what strikes me: even covenant friendships face seasons of distance and difficulty.

When someone we love starts pulling away from God (and often from us), our instinct is to chase them with scripture verses and invitations to church. We mean well, but sometimes love looks like stepping back and simply being present when they're ready.

I'm learning that covenant friendship doesn't mean fixing people. It means loving them consistently, praying for them faithfully, and trusting God with their story. Sometimes the most powerful witness isn't our words but our unwavering presence in their life.

Your friend who's struggling with faith right now? They need to know you're safe, that your love isn't conditional on their church attendance or spiritual performance. Keep being the friend who shows up, listens without judgment, and loves like Jesus does.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me love my friends with covenant faithfulness. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to simply be present. Protect the hearts of those I love who are wrestling with you, and let them see your love through mine. Amen.
