The One Who Finishes What He Starts

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. โ€” Philippians 1:6

There's something quietly unsettling about unfinished things. A project left halfway done. A relationship that needed more time. A version of yourself you were sure you'd become by now. We carry these incompletions around, and sometimes they start to feel like evidence that we're beyond fixing or too far behind to catch up.

That's exactly the kind of thinking Paul pushes back against in Philippians 1:6. And what makes this verse so striking is the confidence behind it. Paul doesn't say "I hope God finishes what He started" or "maybe, if you try hard enough." He says he is confident. That word carries the weight of certainty, not wishful thinking.

The original Greek word for "carry it on to completion" is epitelesei, which means to bring something fully to its intended end. Not a partial job. Not a good effort that ran out of steam. God is described here as someone who sees the whole picture of who you are and who you're becoming, and He has no intention of walking away before the work is done.

This is important because the work being done isn't a behavior modification project. It's a transformation of your whole person, happening over time, through ordinary days, through setbacks and breakthroughs alike. God isn't discouraged by how long it's taking. He's not surprised by your struggles. He started this, and He's still at it.

So on a Monday morning, when you're wondering if you're growing at all, let this be your anchor. You are not an abandoned project. You are a work in progress with the most faithful builder imaginable still on the job.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank You for not giving up on me. On the days when I feel unfinished, remind me that You see the whole picture and You are still at work. Give me patience with the process and confidence in Your faithfulness to complete what You started. I trust You with the parts of me that still need shaping. Amen.
