There's something quietly powerful about the word "morning." Not a grand gesture, not a dramatic reversal, just a new morning. And yet the writer of Lamentations places everything on it.
Here's what makes this passage remarkable: it wasn't written from a comfortable place. Lamentations is a book of raw grief, written in the wake of Jerusalem's destruction. The city had fallen. The people were scattered. The author wasn't sitting peacefully in a garden when he wrote these words. He was in the middle of devastation. That context matters enormously, because it means this isn't wishful thinking or religious optimism. This is hard-won hope, chosen on purpose in one of the darkest moments in Israel's history.
The phrase "new every morning" isn't just poetic. It's a theological statement. God's compassion doesn't get used up. Not because God forgets what happened yesterday, but because his nature is inexhaustible. His faithfulness isn't dependent on our consistency.
You might be carrying something heavy into this Friday. Maybe it's a week that didn't go the way you hoped, or a conversation you wish had gone differently, or just a slow accumulation of tired. The invitation here isn't to pretend none of that happened. It's to receive what God is already extending: a fresh start, right where you are, with exactly what he has for today.
Grace isn't just for the beginning of your journey. It's for every single morning along the way.

Lord, thank you that your compassion doesn't run out on us. Thank you that this morning, whatever we're carrying, your faithfulness is already present and already enough. Teach us to receive your mercy with open hands instead of earning it with exhausted ones. Where we're discouraged, meet us. Where we've stumbled, lift us. And remind us today that every morning with you is genuinely new. In Jesus' name, amen.
