You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. โ Psalm 23:5
There's something remarkable about the timing in this verse. Not after the enemies leave. Not once things have quieted down. The table is set right in the middle of the tension, while the threat is still present and the pressure hasn't let up.
David wrote Psalm 23 from the perspective of a sheep who has learned to trust the shepherd completely. By the time we reach verse five, the psalm has already walked us through dark valleys and still waters. And now David isn't describing some far-off peaceful future. He's describing provision that arrives in the present, even when the present is uncomfortable.
That's the part we often miss. We tend to think God's blessing is something waiting for us on the other side of our hard season. Once this difficulty is over, once this relationship heals, once this situation resolves, then we'll be able to receive what God has for us. But the table is already set. Right now. With everything still unresolved around you.
The anointing oil David mentions was a sign of honor and belonging. The overflowing cup wasn't just adequate provision. It was abundance. And both of these are happening in full view of whatever opposition David was facing.
You might be sitting in the middle of something hard today. A difficult season at work, a strained relationship, a worry that won't leave you alone. God isn't waiting for all of that to clear before He tends to you. He's already preparing the table.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You that Your provision doesn't wait for perfect circumstances. Help me to recognize the table You've already set in my life, even when I'm surrounded by difficulty. Teach me to receive Your care and Your abundance right here, right now, in the middle of wherever I find myself today. You are a faithful shepherd, and I am grateful. Amen.
