The Blessing of Borrowed Strength

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. โ€” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Paul's thorn in the flesh remains one of Scripture's great mysteries. We don't know exactly what plagued him, but we know it was persistent, painful, and seemingly counterproductive to his ministry. Three times he begged God to remove it. Three times God said no. But in that divine refusal came something far more valuable than healing: a revelation of how God's strength operates.

The phrase 'made perfect' here doesn't mean God's power was somehow incomplete before. The Greek word suggests bringing something to its intended purpose or full expression. God's strength isn't diminished by our weakness; it's actually showcased through it. When we're operating in our own capacity, people see our abilities. When we're clearly in over our heads yet still functioning, thriving even, that's when God's fingerprints become unmistakable.

This flips our entire understanding of limitation upside down. We spend so much energy trying to appear capable, competent, like we've got everything handled. We apologize for our struggles and hide our inadequacies. But Paul suggests something radical: what if our weaknesses aren't bugs in the system but features? What if the very places where we feel most insufficient are exactly where God wants to show up most powerfully?

You might be facing something today that feels too big, too complicated, too much for you to handle. Good. That's not a disqualification from God's work; it's an invitation to experience His strength in a way that self-sufficiency never could provide.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Father, help me see my limitations not as barriers but as opportunities for Your power to shine. When I feel weak and overwhelmed, remind me that this is exactly where You love to work. Thank You that Your grace is truly sufficient, even when I can't see how. Amen.
