The Art of Sacred Listening

1 Peter 3:15

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. โ€” 1 Peter 3:15

I used to think witnessing meant having all the right answers ready, like a spiritual debate champion. Then I met Sarah at my daughter's soccer practice. She'd been through a brutal divorce and openly questioned how any loving God could allow such pain. My instinct was to fix, to explain, to defend.

But something stopped me. Maybe it was the raw hurt in her voice, or the way she looked genuinely curious rather than combative. Instead of launching into apologetics, I simply said, "That sounds incredibly hard. I'm sorry you're going through this."

What followed was one of the most meaningful conversations I've ever had about faith. Not because I converted anyone that day, but because I learned something profound: sometimes the most powerful witness isn't our words but our willingness to sit in someone else's questions without rushing to judgment.

Peter's instruction about being prepared to give an answer isn't just about having Scripture memorized. It's about cultivating hearts so anchored in Christ's love that we can respond to doubt and pain with genuine gentleness. When someone shares their skepticism about God, they're often sharing their deepest wounds.

The hope we carry isn't just theological propositions. It's the lived experience of being loved unconditionally, forgiven completely, and held securely even in life's storms. Sometimes people need to see that hope embodied in our patience and respect before they're ready to hear it explained in our words.

๐Ÿ™ A Prayer for Today

Jesus, help me listen with Your heart today. When I encounter those who question or doubt, give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to simply love. May my presence reflect Your gentleness and my words carry Your hope. Amen.
