Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. โ 1 Thessalonians 5:18
I was washing dishes yesterday when it hit me. There I stood, hands deep in soapy water, scrubbing the same plates we've used a hundred times before. Nothing special about the moment. No profound revelation waiting in the bubbles. Just me, the dishes, and this strange sense that God was right there in the ordinary.
We're so conditioned to look for God in the big moments, aren't we? The promotions, the answered prayers that come with fireworks, the obvious miracles. But Paul's words to the Thessalonians suggest something different. He doesn't say "give thanks for the good circumstances" or "give thanks when things go your way." He says give thanks IN all circumstances.
That little word "in" changes everything. It means finding gratitude while you're stuck in traffic, not just when you finally reach your destination. It's about recognizing God's presence in the mundane Tuesday afternoon, not waiting for Sunday's spiritual high.
I've been practicing this lately, and it's shifting how I see my days. The morning coffee tastes different when I remember it's a gift. The hug from my teenager (rare as it is these days) becomes a small miracle when I pause to notice.
God isn't just waiting in our mountaintop experiences. He's in the valley of laundry piles, in the desert of daily routines, in the wilderness of ordinary Wednesday. Maybe that's the real miracle, finding the sacred woven so quietly into our regular lives that we almost miss it.
๐ A Prayer for Today
Father, help me slow down enough today to notice You in the small things. Open my eyes to the gifts hidden in ordinary moments, and give me a heart that overflows with gratitude for the life You've placed right in front of me. Amen.
